"Detestable Arts" Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does this mean that I will be dragged up on stage?
A: NO! Audience is considered an integral part of the world we are creating, and, for that reason, an actor may try to converse or engage with you in some way. If you are comfortable, feel free to play along! If you are not, and would rather just be an observer, they will take the hint. We promise!
Q: If I can choose any direction to move through the space, how will I know which way is best?
A: This show is designed specifically for you to go any direction and explore. Every single audience member will have a unique experience. Go whichever way seems most interesting to you! One method that can be helpful for first timers is to choose a specific character and to follow them throughout their story.
Q: If there are a lot of things going on at the same time, how will I see every single thing that happens?
A: You won’t! That is the fun of this style. Everyone gets to have their own experience. When you compare notes with your friends and family afterwards, you will all have seen a slightly different version of the show. It is common for people to return to see shows done in this style multiple times- to have a different perspective every time.
Q: What if a character pulls me aside, or tries to hand me something?
A: Go along with them! They might tell you a secret, or hand you an important document
Q: Can I touch things?
A: There will be things in the space that are absolutely meant for you to touch/read/etc. So go for it! But not the actors- keep your interactions with them verbal, not physical.
Q: Is the show scary? Can I bring my children?
A: Because of the subject matter (the Salem Witch Trials), the show is disturbing, but is not graphically violent. We recommend the show for ages 12 and up.
Q: Are there refreshments available?
A: Yes! We will be selling beer, wine and cider inside the space. As an added bonus, you will get your drinks from the tavern area that is the setting for numerous scenes, so you don’t have to take a break for the action to get something.
Q: Is the show outdoors?
A: The show primarily takes place outdoors, though there are some short sections that will take place inside the Old School Baptist Meeting House. The doors will remain open for airflow, social distancing will be observed, and masking will be enforced inside. About 80% of the action will take place outdoors.
Q: What happens if I need something during the performance or have an emergency?
A: You will be told at the starting point how to identify crew members (who will be in costume and in character to blend into the show). Just go to the closest crew member, or back to your starting point, where there will be members of our company that can help you.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Whatever will keep you comfortable outdoors on an October evening! And good, comfortable shoes. The style of the performance means that you will likely walk around a bit, and, while we have made an effort to ensure that we are using the most even surfaces possible as walking routes, this is a park and the ground is uneven in spots.
